Earlier today, I was cooking some lunch, and my wife hollered up to me from the basement that the dryer wasn’t working. I checked it out and the knob on the timer switch had broken off. Not sure what to do right in that moment, I texted my landlord about it and went back to making lunch.
He started working on contacting appliance repair folks, and I posted this on facebook:
A friend reminded me, hey, maybe check youtube videos. First I found one about just replacing the knob, but the shaft of the timer switch wouldn’t turn at all when I tried with a pliers, which indicated the switch itself was probably bad.
Around the same time I started tracking down the requisite parts, the appliance repair guy my landlord contacted called me with some questions. Then he told the landlord it’d be $223 to fix it, and of course I’d have to let a person into my house.
I was able to track down the necessary parts, namely a new timer switch and a knob, at a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for $110, in stock and everything, and they’re only doing curbside pickup. So I paid for the parts, picked them up, popped them in, and bam, the dryer’s back working! Now I just deduct that $110 from the upcoming May 1 rent payment and all is right with the world.

This happened to our dryer last year. I was able to find the logic board part online , and with YouTube’s help, I too was able to resurrect the beast. Glad this worked out well for you.

This is the realm where ‘YouTube” and “Ebay Parts Suppliers” converge to make life simpler and less expensive...
I’ve got a dryer project coming up to convert one from natural gas to propane (for the laundry in the shop). $12 and a YouTube vid. Try that in the old days.

It’d be fair for the landlord to deduct $223 from your rent.

Haha well that’s a good thought but unfortunately in this case I’m not exactly going to charge for my labor. I had some really contentious shit with them a year ago with fighting over replacing moldy carpet so I’m doing my best to repair the relationship. They’re happy I saved them some money and I’m happy to have a working dryer without letting a person into the house.

I’ve fixed my dryer on a number of occasions in exactly the same way. Saved a ton of money.

I’ve had to replace a heating element on an electric dryer in the past and YouTube saved my bacon.

my dryer shat itself too, sadly the timer is no longer available.
had to fork out for a new one, AUD$327 (cheapest i could find locally)
no timer available on alibaba or made-in-china.com or eBay
google searches with the part number only brought up one supplier, tried them, but no luck for me.
